NOT the place for Thai food. My dining compadre for the eve loves this place as a general rule - for Vietnamese. We had the duck cabbage salad. The salad was lovely. The duck was meh. I ordered the green curry - in all ways an underwhelming green curry. On top of that? Menu says snow peas. Instead, I got crappy, mealy cooked peas. Gross. After much introspection, I've decided there's no room for two things in my life: cats and peas. Peas are gross. I can deal with snow peas because the texture isn't that of exploding capsules of baby food, which is what these peas were like. Gross. Chalk it up to the gross peas, people.

I met up with fellow yelper Jeff H. for lunch today. He has been there a few times and recommended I try the #77 curry beef Bo Ca dish but after I heard him order the double pork chops I decided to try that instead. I also ordered a iced thai coffee because that stuff like irresistible candy to me. I previously met up with Jeff at a different local Viet place and also had the pork chops there and I felt that other place was slightly better at that particular item, but what made Thang Long superior was the soup that came with our lunches. I think it was the "Hue" soup. It was really tasty and quite good for a freebie, tender beef cubes, thin noodles, flavorful broth.. I wish I had another bowl of it right now. The pork chops were good too but I want to go back for more soup in the future. Service was fine nothing to complain about there. The dining room seemed fine but alittle dated. 3.5/5 overall, 4/5 for the soup

Solid place offering a solid collection of Vietnamese food. I've never tried anything off their Thai menu so this review will be Viet-only. My favorite thing I've tried here by far is the Bun Bo Ca Ri Cha Gio (#77). I love a good Bun bowl and this one is filled with delicious curry beef and egg rolls. It's one of the very best Bun bowls I've had anywhere. After that my menu experiences have been anywhere from ok to good. For example the Pho is nothing special, in my opinion. There isn't much depth of flavor in the broth. But with that being said, any lunch entree here comes with a free cup of soup (which is more like a bowl most anywhere else) and amongst the options you can choose from are a mini-Pho or a mini-Hue (spicy). Which is pretty cool and something I have only seen here. Great value! The Bun Thit (#74) and and Com Suon (#70A), my other two favorite Viet standards, are pretty solid here if nothing remarkable. I could name you at least three local restaurants where I find preferred versions of each of these classic dishes. I do enjoy this place and it's a good option to bring people to who are intimidated by Viet food (as they can order Thai). And the curry beef Bun is out of this world good. Must try! So don't sleep on Thang Long.

Love this place! Has so many options for food. They have a mix of vietnamese and Chinese food. The Viet food is very authentic and not offered at other Viet restaurant. I love their options of mini soup bowls. Sometimes I want a bowl of pho but also something else too. My favorite are their diy wraps or bbq. Other Viet restaurant in the area doesn't offer that. Bun bo hue Viet #83 Disappointing. First, there were not as many noodles as I would have liked. There were a few beef slices, which were nice and tender. There were larger pieces of beef that were horribly tough. I tried to eat a piece and failed miserably. I couldn't even chew on a piece because it was so tough. The blood tasted fine, and I was too full to try the pork knuckle. Most disappointing of all, however, was the broth. It tasted bland and flavorless to me, and it wasn't very spicy. I tried to add hoisin sauce and Sriracha for more flavor, until I eventually gave up after attempting to eat half the bowl. The bf got a red curry, which I tried. The flavor was much better than the bun bo hue. After trying some of his curry, I went back to eating my bun bo hue, which practically tasted like water after trying some of his curry. Food is the most important factor in my reviews, but the ambiance of this place definitely didn't help. It was kind of dark and old looking. It reminded me of a Mexican restaurant for some reason. Overall, I don't plan to return if I'm in the area... I would go somewhere else.

This is my go to pho place in the area. It's close to my house, the food is decent, and their #95 pho is consistently good. I haven't eaten at the restaurant (I'm usually getting take out), so I don't know how their customer service is, beyond taking my order over the phone (hence, the four stars, instead of five). Also, their Thang Long fried rice is a great secondary dish to get. What I usually end up doing is getting their #95 combination pho and the fried rice, just to make their credit card minimum. The fried rice reheats really well, so it ends up being my lunch for a few days. Yum yum yum.

Become somewhat of a regular (twice a month at least) since it's a half a mile from my house at 12-john r. I always get carry out. Panang curry with chicken is a favorite, have not been let down, it's always hot and generous portion. Medium spice is good for me and I like spice. Beware of hot!

I could easily give this place three stars but the staff are really kind and fast, so four it is. The menu seems to be a hodgepodge of many nationalities. The spicy soup that comes with the lunch special is really great. I ask for extra napkins for my runny nose during this course. The pork spring rolls are solid, always hot, and really tasty. The dishes I've had beyond this are just O.K. mainly stir fry, Thai, and a few other random things. The main lunch course is a bit of a let down after having such a great start. It isn't expensive and there are better options but its a solid place if you can't figure out where to go.

I came here on a Sunday around 12:30 with my family. I was very pleasantly surprised with this restaurant, the prices were very reasonable for Pho and the portion sizes were large. They were generous with meat in the dishes and the service was quick. The decor of the restaurant is just so-so, and it looks like a little bit of a hole in the wall, but for food that good for so cheap, I don't care. Will definitely be coming back.

Wow. Wow. I'll say it again, wow. We were seriously impressed! Fresh rolls, hot bowls of pho on a Saturday night. Thang Long delivers! :) We weren't really expecting anything, so that added to the magic of the evening. We started with cha gio (fried spring rolls, $2.50) and pork and shrimp soft rice rolls (4 for $3.95). Out first came the fried ones, and I'm not gonna lie, but it wasn't attractive. I was expecting a deep golden brown color, but out came a light tan spring roll. Husband was a little hesitant to try, but I went ahead and wore the guinea pig hat. Once bitten into, I gave him the thumbs up and wide eyes look. It was hot, perfectly balanced, crunchy and not oily, and just enough rice vermicelli mixed in with the pork mixture. So good. I was even taking a guess that maybe it wasn't deep fried, but baked instead. Husband agreed as well, and we were on our way to Vietnamese food heaven. The shrimp and pork rolls not only looked lovely, but it tasted magnificent!! Fresh and cool shrimp was balanced with the sweetness of the cured pork, and the hints of mint with rice vermicelli was perfectly wrapped in the fresh rice wrapper. It's a good thing they gave us 4, as we probably would have ordered two to satisfy our craving. It was that good, you gotta get it. Your mouth and stomach will thank you later. *drools* Soon after, our pho dac biet #95 ($6.50, special combo beef noodle soup) arrived. Steam rising from the deluxe bowls, the mere image of these got us excited to slurp and chomp away. We filled our bowls with the obligatory bean sprouts, basil, chilies, limes and let it simmer a bit. After a few minutes, we started devouring our bowls. Noodles perfectly cooked without being mushy, white onions provided the peppery bite to the broth, broth having the deep aromatic flavors with hints of star anise and coriander seeds permeating through each slurp, and quality, QUALITY cuts of brisket, beef slices, and beef meatballs. If that wasn't enough, the slices of tendon and tripe were not gummy, and perfectly gelatinous; indicative that the ingredients were fresh. I am thankful that there wasn't a fish sauce after taste, something I'm not the hugest fan of. A subtle amount is fine, but it shouldn't overwhelm the beef bone stock. The owner and waiter were nice, friendly, and accommodating. When I asked for "more limes", I indeed, got more limes; not just 1 extra sliver. :) We left happy and full, and are happy to say that we think we've found a regular spot for our pho cravings! This place definitely reminds me of the ones I've had back at home! I haven't tried the Thai offerings, but am curious now because I was thoroughly happy with the Vietnamese food. Give this place a try; it's definitely worth it! We will surely be back over and over again! :)

You should really be going here instead of reading this review. This place is kind of run-down and it's in a strip mall, but you won't care about that after eating (if you're even the kind of person who cares in the first place-- I'm not). The menu is huge. They have all kinds of dishes. Soups, big soups aka pho, stir-fry, rice, curries, noodles, fresh rolls, salads, it goes on and on! A smart co-worker took a group of us here, and I jealously glared at everyone else's food because I wanted to try everything. I had a seafood veggie combo stir-fry. It was amazing. I came back the next day ALONE to try the cabbage-chicken salad. It was one of the best things I've ever eaten. It has cabbage, onion, peppers, thai basil, mint, cilantro, peanuts, and a sweet-spicy-sour dressing that I wanted to bathe in. It also came with prawn chips. I ate them like nobody was watching. The service is great. Everyone is friendly. The food is even better. I can't say enough good things.

Really good - we had the crab and shrimp rolls to start (delicious!). My bf got the drunken noodle with beef (great), with huge wide noodles, eggs, pea pods pepper; and I got the rolls with the sci-fi gastronomie "roll your own" crispy rolls. It's sci-fi bc they give you these wrappers that you soak in water and they become like edible cellophane - sooo amazing! If you want a big bang for your buck for delicious Pho, this is the place to go. Even having moved 40 mins away, I still drive out there just for their Pho. The decor is a little run down, but sometimes those are the restaurants that have the best food! I always get the Deluxe Pho and half the time I am unable to finish it....so much deliciousness in one bowl! My husband is not big into soups, but he's a huge fan of Pho now. Let me start by saying this restaurant is in bad need of basic cleaning and maintenance. It is dark and dingy and desperately needs updating. We went there for lunch on a Tuesday and upon entering a child (presumably the owner's) was running around. We were not acknowledged by the visible staff of three, despite only four tables being filled. We waited about 5 minutes and one of the two waitresses, (who was not friendly at all) seated us. I ordered Xao Curry Bamboo Shoots Xao Ca Ri, which said it had Indian curry , snow peas, red bell peppers, onions, and coconut milk with my choice of chicken in it. It arrived quickly, but I was disappointed that it had 80% bamboo shoots, 10% chicken, and 5% of peas, and 5% red bell peppers and onions. The sauce was very good, but while eating I noticed that my dish did not have snow peas but frozen peas. Only after I had eaten 1/3 of my dish was I able to get our waitresses attention to come to our table. I asked her if my dish had snow peas in it and she said yes. I then pointed to the peas on my plate and asked her if they were snow peas. She stated that they were, and that is what is always served with my dish. I have never seen frozen peas served with any Asian dish before. I took my smart phone and looked up the definition and image of snow peas, which showed that they were not serving snow peas. I once again hailed the waitress down and showed her the image of what snow peas looked like. She was basically irritated and just said "oh" and walked away. I then noticed her speaking with a gentleman and she came back to me and said that the kitchen made a mistake and that the next time it would have the correct peas in it. What next time?

I've never had pho before, but I'm a fan. I had the deluxe pho -- the noodles and broth were GREAT but I wasn't a huge fan of the meats in it. I guess I'll stick with something simpler next time. Also tried the Drunken Noodles and they were good. Will come back for sure.

I gotta admit that the dishes that I've had taste good but the service is horrible. Granted it is a Vietnamese place and they are not know for their service. Cheap food. Fast food. Good food. That's what they're known for. However, with the abundance of other Vietnamese restaurants within a couple miles radius, I really don't see how they could afford not to have good service. If you're with some friends and you just want to relax, they're not usually super busy and they have lots of booths, but just be warned that they will not come by with water, or more things that you may need. Food is pretty fantastic.

Slurp slurp... sniffle sniffle. These are the sounds you make when you eat Pho. I really like this place. The food is good, fast and cheap. I haven't tried too much from their menu but everything so far has been pretty good. The interior is pretty weird with a half remodeled art deco room being combined with an Eastern flavor. For some reason there are like a dozen security cameras all over the place in the dining room. The staff is amusing but not necessarily super friendly. The matriarch lady is all business and direct, there is also a young man there who has a really amusing high voice. Be prepared for it because I about did a spit gag when he came to the table. We have been the Thang Long a few times over the last four years and always enjoy it. The pho really seems to kick the ass of head colds, especially if you eat one before it can really set it. After you eat, stop in the Asian grocery store that is in the same strip mall. They have live crabs you can poke, an extensive selection of special Ramen noodles and a sandalwood soap that I love.

A discovery through Yelp and a true gem! I have no idea what took me so long to review this place. My girlfriend and I have been coming here for a few years now. I discovered this place on Yelp and decided to visit after reading past the mixed reviews. This is the ultimate find. A place with over the top food and friendly staff, disguised in a strip mall and without a financed trendy interior that has nothing to do with the quality of the food. From the poor reviews I've read, it's mainly people complaining that Thang Long hasn't poured a ton of wasted money into redoing their interior and / or complaining of slow service. I think people just need to be more patient. This is simply the way the place operates. They aren't running to your side and bothering you every moment. They're too busy making amazingly fresh food and striving for perfection in every dish that leaves the kitchen. It's a relaxed atmosphere. The staff is friendly and accommodating (if you want your food really hot...they can make it really hot). Plenty of great dishes to choose from on their menu and the ingredients are unbelievably fresh. You have to try this place! Ignore the poor reviews!

This place is amazing! I was overwhelmed by the menu and the selections, it all looked so good! I went with a red Thai curry, a friend that is Vietnamese became very excited when she saw the traditional dish of crispy curry banh xeo, and another friend had a vegetable dish that I can't remember the name, all three were delicious! That same Vietnamese friend likes to rate a restaurant by its Pho and compare it to her mother's, this one past the test with flying colors! I went to this restaurant at a recommendation of a friend who was raving about their Pho. Since she IS a person of taste (YELP Elite material if you ask me!) I thought I'd try it out. I swung by after school one MONDAY and, much to my dismay, the restaurant was CLOSED! I had to come back another time. When I finally swing by and the establishment was open, I ordered the Pho. It was good! The service though was AWFUL! I had to wait about 10 minutes before my order was taken and had to wait another 5 for my water to arrive! Though I ordered both the Pho AND their avocado shake, I only received my Pho! The overall experience was a little bizarre. All throughout my stay, I feel like my presence as a paying customer was NOT welcomed and worse, that they could not wait to get rid of me! There was no "idle chit-chat" from the server (still figuring out whether or not this was a plus or a minus) and I was pretty much left to myself. There wasn't even any pretentious "how is everything" in the middle of my meal! I told my friend about my experience. She agreed and just pretty much shrugged it off as "pretty much European" service and attitude. This WAS my opportunity to SLAM the restaurant with a negative star "I would NOT be back in this lifetime" review but something about it that just made me want to come back. (Ok, so I AM a bit of a masochist sometime. So sue me!) I guess bottom line is, I REALLY WANT TO LIKE this restaurant. During my second visit, the service was better. I ordered the vermicelli this time around and liked it quite well. I DID receive my avocado shake this time around too. I gave them three stars because, although the service was awful the first time around, the food IS quite good and authentic (I guess until I can actually go to Vietnam and taste Vietnamese food WHILE I am there). This three star review is NOT without reservations though because, given the choice and the time, I WOULD rather drive across the border to Bac Lieu and have my Vietnamese food cooked there than here at Thang Long.

The banh seo is not an item found in a lot of Vietnamese restaurants and I definitely reccommend trying it if you have the opportunity to. I'd say 3.5 stars! I went here earlier today and ordered the Pho Xe Lua, the Pho XL special. And OMG was the bowl huge! Its seriously enough for 2 people, and I was starving. I didn't finish mine. However, a few quirks: 1. Pho bowl filled almost to brim. I was afraid if I mixed it around, I would spill it. Give me a little room! 2. Broth very watered down. Not cool man! 3. LOTS of tendon and fat in my soup. Why? I guess it was my fault for not asking it to be removed. The spring rolls were good though. I'd like the spring roll sauce to be a little more flavorful. But mainly, quirk #2 was a dealbreaker for me. I'd still come back, because I want to see what else they have to offer. I want to try the quail, like the other reviewer raved about. And an interesting note, the original owner was still here walking around! I used to go here when I was in middle school with my dad, and that was over 10-11 years ago! This guy has not aged one bit. Must be the Asian genes.

I've been eating at this place for over ten years and very rarely have been let down. Eventhough the menu is super long (over 100 items) I stick to a handful of things. The first are the fresh rolls with peanut hoisin sauce. WIth shrimp and mint and a little pork rind I consider them the best in town. The next are the PHO soups (chocked full of fresh not frozen rice noodles). I usually get #96 which is extra large and has everything including meatballs, beef tripe, beef slices, and tendon. I also like the G3 beef with La-lot leave make your own rolls, and G6 same thing with beef and shrimp. These are especially good summer dishes ( lots of raw vegetables very salad like) and the PHO hot soups are good winter dishes. Lastly I like the whole catfish with ginger-garlic sauce and also vermicilli bowl with curry beef. Be adventerous and try everything on the menu, like the beef salad with lime juice, and the soup with egg noodles and duck. The price is right, the sri racha sauce is spicy, and this place is like a breath of fresh air when you dont know what you want to eat.

My husband and I frequent Thang Long quite a bit.. usually it's our stop on the weekend when we want some great soup. My husband is a huge fan of the hue soup, they put all sorts of meaty parts in the soup and he can't get enough. I'm a big fan of the tom yum soup, I usually get it vegetarian with no tofu and I swear they put extra veggies in there for me which I love. The soup has a great flavor of hot and sour and by the end my nose is usually runny. I've never had to add any type of flavoring to the soup because it's always perfectly flavored. Unlike Da Nang where we both felt like the soup was lacking in all sorts of flavor and couldn't figure out what? The wait staff is hilarious because it's a take no b*s* kind of attitude just what you expect from a hole in the wall type restaurant. The first time we ever went and ate there some people walked in and the waitress pointed to a seat and told them to "sit there" and that was that. We cracked up for a bit about it and knew we would be coming back. If you want some great Vietnamese food... go to Thang Long!!! It's definitely a family owned restaurant and they just know how to do everything correctly. If I was ever adventurous about a meal it would be at this restaurant.

We are regulars. I'm not going to lie. Food is excellent. The vietnamese food is excellent, I should say, as I do not know why anyone would order thai, here? It's quirky... I want to remodel and give this place a thorough cleaning but I don't care. Once our spring rolls arrive... I zero in on the reason we have come again... PLEASE? Is it WRONG to want to order ten spring rolls for myself and sit there and savor the flavor? If it is WRONG... I don't WANT to be right. We settle for one each. Then the owners stop by the table and chat us up a bit. They are so nice. And HERE it comes.. my usual is HU TIEU HOAC MI SAIGON ($7.50! WHAT!) broth chicken and pork, Saigon seafood rice or egg noodle , shrimps, crabmeat, squid, fishcake, BBQ / ground pork ...Aki gets Pho Tai Bo Vien Hanoi rice noodle soup with beef meat balls and medium cooked beef slices. BOTH Are delicious. And since it is COLD and FLU SEAON as of late.... I advise you... there is nothing, NOTHING better than being taken here. Load up your pho... chilis, thai basil.. bean sprouts... mix up your sriacha, hoisin, garlic paste, soy sauce, fish sauce and dip your beef slices... Your nose/head will be clear in NO TIME. I PROMISE YOU.

Many Asian restaurants suffer from an identity crisis. Are they Chinese? Thai? Vietnamese? The problem comes from one of focus. Often you'll see Thai dishes at a Chinese restaurant or Sushi at a Thai restaurant. Unfortunately, most of the time it doesn't work out and you'll merely get "mediocre" everything. Thang Long does not suffer from that problem. They are a Vietnamese restaurant but they serve some Thai and Chinese dishes as well. And they do them all splendidly, making Thang Long a rare gem in the landscape of Asian restaurants in the Madison Heights area The specialty, of course, is Vietnamese food: And if you're into finding something unique and authentic, go no further than the "Hanoi thick sauce" dishes: Chunks of meat (catfish or chicken) served in a stone hotpot with a compelling sauce that is salty and slightly sweet. They also serve something you've probably never tasted before: La Lot leaves, which are used almost exclusively in Vietnamese cuisine. You can order a Bun dish (Bun being a rice bowl with vegetables and meat on top) with Beef La Lot, which are tiny little ground beef sausages wrapped in this exotic leaf. Every time I've taken someone here for the first time, I at least make them try one of mine, and the reaction is always universal: "Wow!" It's hard to describe a new flavor. You just have to try it. The starters are sublime as well: You can get 5 tiny roasted quail served with a simple mix of salt, pepper, and lime juice, and their Thai soups are better than the soup served at most "true" Thai restaurants. The service is kind and efficient: You can tell this is a family-owned establishment, but the service doesn't ever suffer for it. Everyone seems happy to be working there, and it shows. The decor is a bit dated, and the bathrooms are a bit dingy, but if you want a truly excellent meal, definitely consider putting this place on your list.

This place is wonderful! Definitely the best Vietnamese I've had in the Detroit area. Now, I am no Vietnamese expert, so that is just my personal opinion. All I can say is that it was really great. So, now to the food. We started with the ginger tai beef and the make your own spring rolls with the shrimp skewered on sugar cane. The ginger tai beef was the best thing we had all night. I am still thinking about it...seriously it was so flavorful and tender! It had lime juice, mint, chiles, and ginger it was SOO good!! The spring rolls were really good as well. I don't know if I would get the shrimp again, but it was kind of fun to make your own. They give you the rice paper and water and all of the fillings and you roll your own. It isn't the easiest thing, so you may just want to order some that are already rolled for you. For our entrees we all got something different so we could try as much as possible. I got the medium cooked beef pho, which was very good. It came with the usual garnishes to add. My brother got the sizzling duck, which had a nice flavor but there were parts of the duck in there that most people would not want to eat, which was kind of weird. My boyfriend got the lemongrass chicken stir fry which was also really good. It came with bell peppers and scallions in it. I still liked my pho the best. I would definitely recommend coming here if you are a fan of thai or vietnamese food. It was very good. The ambiance and service weren't anything to write home about, but the food made up for it! I honestly haven't been to a thai or vietnamese place, or chinese for that matter, that has really great service so I didn't expect much.

Their fresh rice roll pork/shrimp are the best I've had, and 4 of them for 3.95 is a deal. My crispy rolls were quite tasty. I had the Hue Beef Vermicelli (Beef cube, beef slices, bun bo hue broth) as I like the broth that comes from the traditional Bun Bo Hue Viet, but sans the pigs blood cake and shanks. This was watered down terrible, and really lacked a developed flavor. I'll stick with my spots north of 13 mile.

I've had a variety of dishes here, and all were satisfactory, but I say if you're new to the restaurant (or Vietnamese dishes in general), stick with the pho. It's pretty much a staple of the place, if you ask me, and suitable for just about anyone's palette. If you're unfamiliar with the dish, go into it knowing you can adjust the flavor a bit to your taste, and you will be given the means to do so. It's really kinda fun, actually. Atmosphere is very casual, and the staff is pretty friendly. There can be a bit of a wait for tables, at times, even during the week, but I've always had my food ordered within 20 minutes of walking in the door. The portions are very decent for the price, so don't worry too much about going hungry, here. Interesting note about the place; they have a Durian shake on the menu. You either love it or hate it, there is absolutely no in-between. I was in the latter camp, but that is to be expected, I suppose. I happened to be with a friend who knew (from experience) what the actual fruit Durian was. If you want to read some interesting stuff, do yourself a favor and Google it. Let's just say there are places that have banned it. Anyway, we had to order it out of curiosity. What was really cool about this experience was that our server told us a bit of the history of Durian. After we tried it, and since we were the only table in the restaurant at that point, he escorted us next door to a Vietnamese/Asian market to show us what the fruit looked like and talk about it more. I thought this was a really nice touch, and heck, I learned some new stuff about food that day. Always makes for a good dining experience.

One enchanted evening, I laid eyes for the first time on a man I'd grow to love with all my heart, sitting in a corner booth at Thang Long. Thankfully our server's awe-demanding jewelry dissolved my first-date nerves the moment my eyes caught the gleam. Swinging from this man's neck was a huge gold rope chain with a Buddha medallion at the end-SO fabulous on so many levels I was momentarily stunned into silence! Catching my breath, I ordered up my favorite green curry number and sat back to eyeball my date. Both he and the meal were damn tasty-I was a happy girl. Their menu is extensive, the selection of blended libations alone is like a treasure map of non-alcoholic drinky delights. Avocado? Jackfruit? Come to mama, loves! My curry was packed with goodies as per usual and had quite a kick-in fact everything I've tried here has pleased my palate. Their use of plentiful, fresh ingredients (both veggie and meat) has always impressed, as has the manner of the lady who mans the front, an owner I believe. I find her refreshing and fun, basking in her swirl of surly and sweet. Nearly four years later, my man and I skip down a menu-paved path of adventure that began in that far left booth. Every time I see a Buddha I think of that now-legendary neckwear and Long for the Thang!

On advice from our friend Sammy who is vietnamese recommended Thang Long to us for some good food. I had to goto Madison Hts anyway to pick up some tech from MC and decided to check out the Vietnamese offerings on John R. Everyone and their mothers brother has told me to get the Pho (pronounced 'Fuh' - lol I did not know - But now I know). Bought a huge bowl of the Pho and but unlike many people have said - it was just Ok - i loved its smell the best - it tasted overly flavored with onion. I only wish I had about double the noodles however. Funny to me, I've had microwave Pho before which had tastier broth. I expected a flavor similar but richer. Oh Well. The spring rolls were smaller than I thought, they could of been fresher - they seemed almost to me as if they had been sitting around. Meh, I don't know for sure. We each tried some Ice Tea. I wasn't sure if it was a special type but it was pretty good. My wife who is not much of a Vietnamese food fan, opted for some of the Thai food offerings. She ordered some fried rice dish I can't recall the name, but it had Basil, chicken, and some garlic sauce in it. She liked it but remarked to me a few times It was not as good as what we've had at some other Thai restaurants. The main downfall for me was there was a wait for the food. Service was slow too. I still Hope to go back again and try some of the other items. 3 stars for the food, 2 stars for slow service.

I like to come here when I am eating with vegetarians and I am craving pho, because they have many options. If you are going just for the pho and are among carnivores, I would recommend eating at one of the other restaurants on John R. The thai food is just okay. The waitress is really awesome and helpful and she will make recommendations for you.

Only putting my two cents in because of what the other reviewers failed to mention...maybe because the portions are so big you're too stuffed for dessert! BUBBLE TEA!! So good, I've yet to find any as good in this area, or anywhere else I've traveled. It's creamy & icy with real fruit flavors, unlike the fake slurpee-like bubble teas I've had elsewhere. I usually stop in & order my bubble tea to go, mainly because I'm craving some & I'm in the hood. I typically get mango or coconut, but they're all awesome. The food here is great too, my favorite places seem to be dives...more concentration on the great food & fresh ingredients is fine by me!

Let's be clear: Thang Long is not the place to go if ambiance/ decor are important factors in your restaurant choice. But if you're looking for cheap, flavorful, fresh food, look no further. As many have mentioned, the soups are excellent. Even if you order carry out, they send you off with little packets of herbs, chilies, sprouts and limes to doctor your soup at home. Another favorite dish of mine is the duck cabbage salad (for the recipe, follow the link on my profile to my blog). The flavors are outstanding- the perfect balance of hot, sour, salty and sweet. (My only complaint is that I have to pick around the flabby duck skin, but I don't mind all that much). We've also tried the do-it-yourself rolls, which were great, and a TON of food. (Just don't expect something akin to PF Chang's lettuce wraps. These are way different and way better.) I have to dissent from those who like the fresh rolls- I think they could be better, and the peanut sauce seems very Americanized. I'd also recommend the Vietnamese items on the menu over the Thai ones. But as long as they keep that duck salad on the menu, I'll keep coming back for more!

My girlfiend and I came there late one night and had Bun Bo Hue (Spicy Noodle Soup) and Hu Tieu (Seafood Noodle Soup). The service was good, food was alright, place needs to be redecorated. Pros: Good price, decent food, good service. Cons: Dishes are not authentic to it's region of origin, needs make-over.

I can't rave about Thang Long, but it's not bad - hence three stars. The food is OK. The fresh rolls were the best thing I've had from their menu. The Bun is not as good as other places, but it's okay. The service is about the same as other Vietnamese Restaurants in the area. I think it is the largest as far as space and table tops go - so if you need to accommodate a large group this might be a good bet.

Coming in from the cold, our party was quickly greeted and seated by one of the several family members who own/run the place. It seemed like a perfect day for a bowl of soup--our choice, a delicious chicken soup with vermicelli, bean sprouts, green onion and a touch of cilantro. Since we planned to try several items, we avoided the huge bowl of traditional Pho. Our soup was great, a nice rich bowl of chicken soup that tasted totally homemade. Most of the other tables had the Pho--which looked delicious, and seems to be a must-try, and try it I will, on my next visit. Next up was an amazing salad of Lotus stem and shrimp, in a vinegar based dressing, tossed with mint, basil, onion, carrot, red pepper and shrimp chips. The presentation was great. The taste--slightly sweet, slightly tart, even better. We sampled some house "soft rolls", --rice paper wrapper, filled with chilled shrimp, pork, lettuce, vermicelli and fresh mint. The peanut hoisin dipping sauce is excellent. Our finest dish was probably the Quail roasted in five-spice, served with a salt, pepper and lime sauce for dipping. The meat on these small bones was really succulent, to say the least. I could have eaten this all day. Can't wait for my next trip there......

I usually don't write reviews, but I had to come on here and voice this: Worst meal I've had in a long time. And terrible service. The food was really dry and unappetizing, and I'm not a picky eater by any means. It takes a lot for me to not want to eat something. The soup tasted pretty good. I had a Vietnamese style soup with chicken. But the main Vietnamese entree I ordered was terrible. The service was really bad too. Our waitress was just really inattentive and forgetful. Not that that stuff matters that much to me, and if the food was good I wouldn't care, but the service and the food together, it was an overall negative experience. I won't be going back.

I went here because Thuy Thrang is closed on Tuesdays (boo). I had my usual, bo thit something (maybe?), vermicelli noodles with that sweet/sour/spicy sauce, pork, and vegetables served in a large pho bowl. This one was much less flavorful, the nuoc sauce was diluted, and there wasn't any mint chopped up in the dish. The pork was also not quite on mark. My friend ordered a fried egg noodle dish that was like a Chinese food style stir fried pork with vegetables served over a ramen noodle crown. No, I'm serious, this was an ode to college themed Chinese fast food. The good: - NO SMOKING (unlike Thuy where the owner chain smokes) - lots of seating - they have hot pots - fresh vegetables - open Tuesdays (but closed Mondays) The bad: - pretty bland I mean, I would go back here.. but there's no real reason for me to other than to go on Tuesdays!

Like many reviewers have alluded to prior to me, Thang Long has a very distinct family run restaurant feel to it. A really really slow, unattentive, delicious cooking family run restaurant. Our server (who I assumed was an owner or some kind of management) reminded me a bit of a cross between Bobcat Goldthwait and Rick Moranis. The restaurant was packed on a Saturday night and he was the only one taking orders/writing up bills/etc. Probably waited 20 minutes + to get greeted and place an order. Food came out quickly but good luck getting any attention throughout the meal. Per the suggestion of another review, I decided to try out the curry pancake. It reminded me of an overstuffed Asian/Indian crepe. It claimed to be filled with "shrimps" but it was a little light on shrimp. It did have plenty of different kinds of beef, though. The dish had a very unique flavor combined with plumish sauce and I was happy I tried it out. My friends are huge pho fans and both of them raved about Thang Long's pho soups. Overall, it's a cool place to check out an Asian cuisine that isn't widely available in the area.
Up there for me as one of the best Pho places out of all the ones in Madison Heights...........and I have been to them all. You do have 2 size options here which you don't have at most of the others. The large one is HUGE. Plenty of beef and the broth is wonderful. Taro bubble tea was also excellent. Service was attentive and friendly.

This place only has one edible dish. Their soupy dishes are way water down. You can only order the Bo Nuong Di. I've try several dishes there and wasn't even able to withstand it. True I grew up on this stuff and expect certain flavors. But I wouldn't waste my gas driving here.

I'm reading all these reviews and I'm perplexed....has no one really eaten here?? I feel that Thaang Long is wonderful. My family and I go here almost once a week, and often are accompanied by friends who get really excited when we say we are going here. The interior is a little dated, but really not important to me. The food is affordable and delicious, my favorites are the Saigon Beef and the Catfish with lemon grass and red pepper...but beware, the catfish has bones!!! Other stand outs are the fresh rolls that you assemble yourself, the Bum Bo Huey (spicy beef pho), and the chicken with lemongrass. I've started adventuring away from my usual to try other things, but everything I have had here has been utterly delicious! The family that runs the place is always present, and from my experience they are always friendly and happy to see us. It's extremely affordable and you get quite a bit of food. Dang it, I'm going to go there right now!! :)

This is hands down my favorite restaurant. My wife and I go there every week. I'm never bored with their menu because they literally have a 5-6 page menu. They have Thai food but I never order it. The Vietnamese dishes are where it's at. When we go there we usually start out with the Quails which are crispy and seasoned well. The bones in the quail are so crispy you can eat them. At least I do. Every time I go there I try something different. I've probably had 80% of what they make. My wife isn't so adventurous. She gets the double pork chops every week and an order of the garlic butter shrimp, which you must try. I used to always order Ph but now I always try their house Specialties. Last time I ordered the whole crispy sweet and sour catfish. It was cooked perfectly. It's a lot of food. It could be split between 4 people. The only things that I would not recommend are the steamed fish and the rice soup.

Simply the best Pho in Metro Detroit. The only place I've had better pho was in Denver, Colorado where I was surprised by the large Vietnamese population. Let's go through the basics: Decor: This place is a dump. Usually, the family that runs this place has their baby there and while you're eating, you'll see the grandma in the corner changing the baby's diaper. Bad yes, but you know the food is home cooked. Don't even bother with the bathroom. Do ALL of your peeing before and after you arrive here. Service: Spotty sometimes. When it's busy, it can get downright horrible. They do try hard though. Usually, though, the food comes out pretty fast. Food: Here's where they shine. Everything I've had at Thang Long is pretty darn good. I usually walk in and get an order of summer rolls and the deluxe pho. Don't try the deluxe pho unless you're willing to eat all the authentic style pho with tripe, beef tendon, and rare slices of beef. Yummmm! (On a side note, I have tried their other dishes and they are also quite good. The beef, chicken, and shrimp dishes are all quite tasty. Stay away from the Thai food. It's ok, but these people are Vietnamese, so guess what? They're good at making Vietnamese food!) Price: $10 for a huge bowl of pho and the summer rolls. I just can't complain. I don't live in the area anymore, but whenever I do, it's one of the places where I stop in.

I'm a convert. My first trip was stellar. So was my second. And my third. Now, I'm beginning to explore the giant menu, and I have yet to be disappointed. I tried the duck salad on my last trip and the owner complimented me on 'brave choice.' Yeah, the service is not exactly overly hospitable, but it's efficient and unobtrusive. The owner is genuinely friendly, though, and the 3-year-old-girl who weaves in and out of tables is a doll. A real find for the six of you in Michigan who Yelp.

This is not only the best Vietnamese restaurant I've ever been to- it's one of the best all-around restaurants EVER. The food is beautiful, exceptional and FRESH. I can smell the fresh herbs as I type this. I hope I live here long enough to taste everything on the menu. It's that good. My advice is to try something you've never had before. It will blow you away.

I only came here because I heard this was the only PHO noodle soup restaurant in Detroit. I was far from cali and I was craving. Not bad pho, poor or little service was expected. You walk into a store front with a glass counter to the left with no greeter. The space is cold. Walk a couple steps straight and make a right, now you're in the restaurant section with tables and people seated. To your immediate right there are steps and raised wall seating area near the window, which makes the restaurant very dark because it's blocking the only light source to the main dining. The waitress doesn't understand too much English. Almost everyone ordered the famous combo pho noodle soup. I ordered the all white chicken.

Went to Thang Long today for lunch with my sister. We both ordered the Pho chicken soup with vegetables and vermicelli noodles. We also ordered the fresh rolls. It was great. The Pho was flavored perfectly and it was very fresh. The fresh rolls were equally as yummy. The woman who took our order was very helpful and very nice. Of course I had to notice the beautiful array of food being brought to other tables. I am already thinking about my next time back.

I was on the fence between four and five stars..I decided on five. The five is solely based on the food. This is great Vietnamese food. The Pho is the BEST!! The cabbage salad and fresh rolls are also excellent. The place is nothing fancy and the bathroom door has a shaky door handle LOL...but the food is oh so good. The service is OK. Waiter Kevin seems to always be there. He is short and to the point. But he was nice enough to bring out some different noodles and explain what is what. I've tried several dishes and they were all excellent. I wish we lived closer, but we seem to eat here twice a month. I would highly recommend this place to friends.

First let me say if you are a patient person and don't mind the waiting then you will be pleasantly surprised in the end. The service is very, very slow, but the food is amazing for the price. I will be going back again soon and recommend this place to anyone who doesn't mind poor service, but enjoys great food!!!

This place came on a recommendation by someone and I was disappointed. It is certainly one of the cleaner Vietnamese restaurants that I have been to, but the food was certainly forgettable. Who knows? Maybe I am spoiled having grown up in Vegas with their stellar Viet cuisine.

I do not eat a lot of Vietnamese food nor did I grow up in an area with a variety of Vietnamese restaurants, but I like to eat food and I like this place. Two things it has: cheap eats and huge portions, two things it does not: good service and current decor. They pile on the fresh food, may I suggest the build-your-own fresh rolls, a plate of herbs and veggies with some work equals tasty. I love the Pho, the curry fried rice was great, I keep wanting the try new items but always want more of what I already had. If it wasn't for the out-dated decor, the service that spends more time on the phone than waiting on you it would be a home run. However if you walk in knowing what your in for, you walk out fat and happy every time.

I've enjoyed Vietnamese food for a long long time...HOWEVER...This place was terrible. I don't expect the best decor for this general area alone, but it wouldn't hurt to try and freshen up the place a LITTLE....Whatever! Felt like a black hole and electricity was too much of a cost to turn on some lights!... To the food --- We started with the fried spring rolls that were fried earlier in the day and then heated back up in the oven, as we could clearly see the pan marks on the bottom. They were sooo extremely crunchy and dry, like dog biscuits. I settled with the shrimp in hanoi sauce. Now I have a general understanding of many Asian flavors but this was ABSOLUTELY INEDIBLE!! Two bites, 1 and 2 to confirm the OMG gag reflex. The sauce probably was not as thick earlier in the day and but with staying on a burner all day as a reduction occurred, it tasted as though fish sauce was continuously added to thin it a bit OVER AND OVER to keep it from burning....you may as well have poured SALTY SLIME down your neck. Was soo disgusting. I had NEVER had anything sooo salty. I couldn't taste anything else at all, just salt. I had the two bites, both including a shrimp and I know my knuckles swelled up before we left. Anyways, the service didn't make it any better either, inattentive and could give a shit whether we enjoyed our food or not. I had to ask for my bill...just to get the hell out. If I could give 1/2 star, I would. I will say though everyone else in the place seemed to be attached to the pho's...I can do a bowl of noodles in broth with slabs of pig and basil floating in it at home!

This place is probably the best Viet restaurant in town. The pho is great and the number 96 is the jumbo size that will feed a king. The crispy eggroll number A1 is awesome with sauce. Just beware of the owner's fat kid (son). He can be quite an obnoxious little brat. He locked my friend out of the restaurant.

I have only tried the pho, the fresh rolls (the ones with the shrimp in it), and a desert drink with coconut milk and a lot of other stuff in it. Ok, obviously I have very little knowledge of vietnamese cuisine, but I know what's good and Thang Long's pho is good. Awesome is more like it. I was turned onto pho by a former co-worker. He took me to Thang Long's one day after we got off work early. It was a cold Michigan day, and we both wanted something that would warm us up. We walked in and were seated by the friendly hostess, my buddy ordered for me. I want to point out that the menu has descriptions to go along with the vietnamese names of the dishes, so you won't be lost if you can't read the language. The food came quickly, and has everytime I've been there. We had 2 extra large bowls of pho, a double order of fresh rolls, and the two desert drinks. They serve all the 'fixings' with the pho: sprout, jalepenos, and a few other things. All condiments are already at your table (fish sauce, chili garlic sauce, soy, etc). I prepped my pho as my co-worker instructed, dipped my big spoon in (silverware is always spotless) and the rest is history. I have only visited during lunch time, so I don't know what kind of atmoshpere the place has during dinner and on the weekends. But its always quiet and cozy. I cannot say that the place looks all that great, but they keep it clean, which is good enough for me. Prices are great; my bill is usually less than $10. The menu is almost endless, and I am always amazed at how much stuff on it sounds so good. If you enjoy pho, I recommend this restaurant. And the desert drink I had was an experience on a whole different level of enjoyment.

I love Thang Long, not for the ambiance, but for a few regular dishes I stick to and their willingness to make them vegan (leave out fish sauce, chicken stock, etc.). I just ask them to make it vegetarian, with "clear stock" (probably water?), and they know what I mean and seem happy to accommodate. Some places either don't understand what I'm talking about or I get the feeling they're just nodding and ignoring my request. They also include a lot of nice veggies in their dishes, instead of just throwing in a few token carrot slices and pea pods. The greens and mushrooms are especially good. My absolute favorite dish is the jumbo pan fried noodles with tofu and vegetables, which has big mushrooms, chinese broccoli and onions. The flavor of the sauce (which comes separately if you get it as take-out, so as not to soggify the crispy noodles) and the texture of the noodles, both crispy and soft, is amazing. This is my go-to had-a-hard-day-need-takeout-for-dinner dish and it always hits the spot. When eating in I also like the rice paper rolls and sometimes get one of the Vietnamese (vs. Thai) stir fry veggie dishes. I haven't ordered any of the Thai things since it's primarily a Vietnamese place. The service can be slow when eating in, but I find everyone very friendly. There's definitely a family-run feel, as typically a grandma or small child are hanging out behind the front desk when I come in to order my takeout.

NOT the place for Thai food. My dining compadre for the eve loves this place as a general rule - for Vietnamese. We had the duck cabbage salad. The salad was lovely. The duck was meh. I ordered the green curry - in all ways an underwhelming green curry. On top of that? Menu says snow peas. Instead, I got crappy, mealy cooked peas. Gross. After much introspection, I've decided there's no room for two things in my life: cats and peas. Peas are gross. I can deal with snow peas because the texture isn't that of exploding capsules of baby food, which is what these peas were like. Gross. Chalk it up to the gross peas, people.

I met up with fellow yelper Jeff H. for lunch today. He has been there a few times and recommended I try the #77 curry beef Bo Ca dish but after I heard him order the double pork chops I decided to try that instead. I also ordered a iced thai coffee because that stuff like irresistible candy to me. I previously met up with Jeff at a different local Viet place and also had the pork chops there and I felt that other place was slightly better at that particular item, but what made Thang Long superior was the soup that came with our lunches. I think it was the "Hue" soup. It was really tasty and quite good for a freebie, tender beef cubes, thin noodles, flavorful broth.. I wish I had another bowl of it right now. The pork chops were good too but I want to go back for more soup in the future. Service was fine nothing to complain about there. The dining room seemed fine but alittle dated. 3.5/5 overall, 4/5 for the soup

Solid place offering a solid collection of Vietnamese food. I've never tried anything off their Thai menu so this review will be Viet-only. My favorite thing I've tried here by far is the Bun Bo Ca Ri Cha Gio (#77). I love a good Bun bowl and this one is filled with delicious curry beef and egg rolls. It's one of the very best Bun bowls I've had anywhere. After that my menu experiences have been anywhere from ok to good. For example the Pho is nothing special, in my opinion. There isn't much depth of flavor in the broth. But with that being said, any lunch entree here comes with a free cup of soup (which is more like a bowl most anywhere else) and amongst the options you can choose from are a mini-Pho or a mini-Hue (spicy). Which is pretty cool and something I have only seen here. Great value! The Bun Thit (#74) and and Com Suon (#70A), my other two favorite Viet standards, are pretty solid here if nothing remarkable. I could name you at least three local restaurants where I find preferred versions of each of these classic dishes. I do enjoy this place and it's a good option to bring people to who are intimidated by Viet food (as they can order Thai). And the curry beef Bun is out of this world good. Must try! So don't sleep on Thang Long.

Love this place! Has so many options for food. They have a mix of vietnamese and Chinese food. The Viet food is very authentic and not offered at other Viet restaurant. I love their options of mini soup bowls. Sometimes I want a bowl of pho but also something else too. My favorite are their diy wraps or bbq. Other Viet restaurant in the area doesn't offer that. Bun bo hue Viet #83 Disappointing. First, there were not as many noodles as I would have liked. There were a few beef slices, which were nice and tender. There were larger pieces of beef that were horribly tough. I tried to eat a piece and failed miserably. I couldn't even chew on a piece because it was so tough. The blood tasted fine, and I was too full to try the pork knuckle. Most disappointing of all, however, was the broth. It tasted bland and flavorless to me, and it wasn't very spicy. I tried to add hoisin sauce and Sriracha for more flavor, until I eventually gave up after attempting to eat half the bowl. The bf got a red curry, which I tried. The flavor was much better than the bun bo hue. After trying some of his curry, I went back to eating my bun bo hue, which practically tasted like water after trying some of his curry. Food is the most important factor in my reviews, but the ambiance of this place definitely didn't help. It was kind of dark and old looking. It reminded me of a Mexican restaurant for some reason. Overall, I don't plan to return if I'm in the area... I would go somewhere else.

This is my go to pho place in the area. It's close to my house, the food is decent, and their #95 pho is consistently good. I haven't eaten at the restaurant (I'm usually getting take out), so I don't know how their customer service is, beyond taking my order over the phone (hence, the four stars, instead of five). Also, their Thang Long fried rice is a great secondary dish to get. What I usually end up doing is getting their #95 combination pho and the fried rice, just to make their credit card minimum. The fried rice reheats really well, so it ends up being my lunch for a few days. Yum yum yum.

Become somewhat of a regular (twice a month at least) since it's a half a mile from my house at 12-john r. I always get carry out. Panang curry with chicken is a favorite, have not been let down, it's always hot and generous portion. Medium spice is good for me and I like spice. Beware of hot!

I could easily give this place three stars but the staff are really kind and fast, so four it is. The menu seems to be a hodgepodge of many nationalities. The spicy soup that comes with the lunch special is really great. I ask for extra napkins for my runny nose during this course. The pork spring rolls are solid, always hot, and really tasty. The dishes I've had beyond this are just O.K. mainly stir fry, Thai, and a few other random things. The main lunch course is a bit of a let down after having such a great start. It isn't expensive and there are better options but its a solid place if you can't figure out where to go.

I came here on a Sunday around 12:30 with my family. I was very pleasantly surprised with this restaurant, the prices were very reasonable for Pho and the portion sizes were large. They were generous with meat in the dishes and the service was quick. The decor of the restaurant is just so-so, and it looks like a little bit of a hole in the wall, but for food that good for so cheap, I don't care. Will definitely be coming back.

Wow. Wow. I'll say it again, wow. We were seriously impressed! Fresh rolls, hot bowls of pho on a Saturday night. Thang Long delivers! :) We weren't really expecting anything, so that added to the magic of the evening. We started with cha gio (fried spring rolls, $2.50) and pork and shrimp soft rice rolls (4 for $3.95). Out first came the fried ones, and I'm not gonna lie, but it wasn't attractive. I was expecting a deep golden brown color, but out came a light tan spring roll. Husband was a little hesitant to try, but I went ahead and wore the guinea pig hat. Once bitten into, I gave him the thumbs up and wide eyes look. It was hot, perfectly balanced, crunchy and not oily, and just enough rice vermicelli mixed in with the pork mixture. So good. I was even taking a guess that maybe it wasn't deep fried, but baked instead. Husband agreed as well, and we were on our way to Vietnamese food heaven. The shrimp and pork rolls not only looked lovely, but it tasted magnificent!! Fresh and cool shrimp was balanced with the sweetness of the cured pork, and the hints of mint with rice vermicelli was perfectly wrapped in the fresh rice wrapper. It's a good thing they gave us 4, as we probably would have ordered two to satisfy our craving. It was that good, you gotta get it. Your mouth and stomach will thank you later. *drools* Soon after, our pho dac biet #95 ($6.50, special combo beef noodle soup) arrived. Steam rising from the deluxe bowls, the mere image of these got us excited to slurp and chomp away. We filled our bowls with the obligatory bean sprouts, basil, chilies, limes and let it simmer a bit. After a few minutes, we started devouring our bowls. Noodles perfectly cooked without being mushy, white onions provided the peppery bite to the broth, broth having the deep aromatic flavors with hints of star anise and coriander seeds permeating through each slurp, and quality, QUALITY cuts of brisket, beef slices, and beef meatballs. If that wasn't enough, the slices of tendon and tripe were not gummy, and perfectly gelatinous; indicative that the ingredients were fresh. I am thankful that there wasn't a fish sauce after taste, something I'm not the hugest fan of. A subtle amount is fine, but it shouldn't overwhelm the beef bone stock. The owner and waiter were nice, friendly, and accommodating. When I asked for "more limes", I indeed, got more limes; not just 1 extra sliver. :) We left happy and full, and are happy to say that we think we've found a regular spot for our pho cravings! This place definitely reminds me of the ones I've had back at home! I haven't tried the Thai offerings, but am curious now because I was thoroughly happy with the Vietnamese food. Give this place a try; it's definitely worth it! We will surely be back over and over again! :)

You should really be going here instead of reading this review. This place is kind of run-down and it's in a strip mall, but you won't care about that after eating (if you're even the kind of person who cares in the first place-- I'm not). The menu is huge. They have all kinds of dishes. Soups, big soups aka pho, stir-fry, rice, curries, noodles, fresh rolls, salads, it goes on and on! A smart co-worker took a group of us here, and I jealously glared at everyone else's food because I wanted to try everything. I had a seafood veggie combo stir-fry. It was amazing. I came back the next day ALONE to try the cabbage-chicken salad. It was one of the best things I've ever eaten. It has cabbage, onion, peppers, thai basil, mint, cilantro, peanuts, and a sweet-spicy-sour dressing that I wanted to bathe in. It also came with prawn chips. I ate them like nobody was watching. The service is great. Everyone is friendly. The food is even better. I can't say enough good things.

If you want a big bang for your buck for delicious Pho, this is the place to go. Even having moved 40 mins away, I still drive out there just for their Pho. The decor is a little run down, but sometimes those are the restaurants that have the best food! I always get the Deluxe Pho and half the time I am unable to finish it....so much deliciousness in one bowl! My husband is not big into soups, but he's a huge fan of Pho now. Let me start by saying this restaurant is in bad need of basic cleaning and maintenance. It is dark and dingy and desperately needs updating. We went there for lunch on a Tuesday and upon entering a child (presumably the owner's) was running around. We were not acknowledged by the visible staff of three, despite only four tables being filled. We waited about 5 minutes and one of the two waitresses, (who was not friendly at all) seated us. I ordered Xao Curry Bamboo Shoots Xao Ca Ri, which said it had Indian curry , snow peas, red bell peppers, onions, and coconut milk with my choice of chicken in it. It arrived quickly, but I was disappointed that it had 80% bamboo shoots, 10% chicken, and 5% of peas, and 5% red bell peppers and onions. The sauce was very good, but while eating I noticed that my dish did not have snow peas but frozen peas. Only after I had eaten 1/3 of my dish was I able to get our waitresses attention to come to our table. I asked her if my dish had snow peas in it and she said yes. I then pointed to the peas on my plate and asked her if they were snow peas. She stated that they were, and that is what is always served with my dish. I have never seen frozen peas served with any Asian dish before. I took my smart phone and looked up the definition and image of snow peas, which showed that they were not serving snow peas. I once again hailed the waitress down and showed her the image of what snow peas looked like. She was basically irritated and just said "oh" and walked away. I then noticed her speaking with a gentleman and she came back to me and said that the kitchen made a mistake and that the next time it would have the correct peas in it. What next time?

I've never had pho before, but I'm a fan. I had the deluxe pho -- the noodles and broth were GREAT but I wasn't a huge fan of the meats in it. I guess I'll stick with something simpler next time. Also tried the Drunken Noodles and they were good. Will come back for sure.

I gotta admit that the dishes that I've had taste good but the service is horrible. Granted it is a Vietnamese place and they are not know for their service. Cheap food. Fast food. Good food. That's what they're known for. However, with the abundance of other Vietnamese restaurants within a couple miles radius, I really don't see how they could afford not to have good service. If you're with some friends and you just want to relax, they're not usually super busy and they have lots of booths, but just be warned that they will not come by with water, or more things that you may need. Food is pretty fantastic.

Slurp slurp... sniffle sniffle. These are the sounds you make when you eat Pho. I really like this place. The food is good, fast and cheap. I haven't tried too much from their menu but everything so far has been pretty good. The interior is pretty weird with a half remodeled art deco room being combined with an Eastern flavor. For some reason there are like a dozen security cameras all over the place in the dining room. The staff is amusing but not necessarily super friendly. The matriarch lady is all business and direct, there is also a young man there who has a really amusing high voice. Be prepared for it because I about did a spit gag when he came to the table. We have been the Thang Long a few times over the last four years and always enjoy it. The pho really seems to kick the ass of head colds, especially if you eat one before it can really set it. After you eat, stop in the Asian grocery store that is in the same strip mall. They have live crabs you can poke, an extensive selection of special Ramen noodles and a sandalwood soap that I love.

A discovery through Yelp and a true gem! I have no idea what took me so long to review this place. My girlfriend and I have been coming here for a few years now. I discovered this place on Yelp and decided to visit after reading past the mixed reviews. This is the ultimate find. A place with over the top food and friendly staff, disguised in a strip mall and without a financed trendy interior that has nothing to do with the quality of the food. From the poor reviews I've read, it's mainly people complaining that Thang Long hasn't poured a ton of wasted money into redoing their interior and / or complaining of slow service. I think people just need to be more patient. This is simply the way the place operates. They aren't running to your side and bothering you every moment. They're too busy making amazingly fresh food and striving for perfection in every dish that leaves the kitchen. It's a relaxed atmosphere. The staff is friendly and accommodating (if you want your food really hot...they can make it really hot). Plenty of great dishes to choose from on their menu and the ingredients are unbelievably fresh. You have to try this place! Ignore the poor reviews!

This place is amazing! I was overwhelmed by the menu and the selections, it all looked so good! I went with a red Thai curry, a friend that is Vietnamese became very excited when she saw the traditional dish of crispy curry banh xeo, and another friend had a vegetable dish that I can't remember the name, all three were delicious! That same Vietnamese friend likes to rate a restaurant by its Pho and compare it to her mother's, this one past the test with flying colors! I went to this restaurant at a recommendation of a friend who was raving about their Pho. Since she IS a person of taste (YELP Elite material if you ask me!) I thought I'd try it out. I swung by after school one MONDAY and, much to my dismay, the restaurant was CLOSED! I had to come back another time. When I finally swing by and the establishment was open, I ordered the Pho. It was good! The service though was AWFUL! I had to wait about 10 minutes before my order was taken and had to wait another 5 for my water to arrive! Though I ordered both the Pho AND their avocado shake, I only received my Pho! The overall experience was a little bizarre. All throughout my stay, I feel like my presence as a paying customer was NOT welcomed and worse, that they could not wait to get rid of me! There was no "idle chit-chat" from the server (still figuring out whether or not this was a plus or a minus) and I was pretty much left to myself. There wasn't even any pretentious "how is everything" in the middle of my meal! I told my friend about my experience. She agreed and just pretty much shrugged it off as "pretty much European" service and attitude. This WAS my opportunity to SLAM the restaurant with a negative star "I would NOT be back in this lifetime" review but something about it that just made me want to come back. (Ok, so I AM a bit of a masochist sometime. So sue me!) I guess bottom line is, I REALLY WANT TO LIKE this restaurant. During my second visit, the service was better. I ordered the vermicelli this time around and liked it quite well. I DID receive my avocado shake this time around too. I gave them three stars because, although the service was awful the first time around, the food IS quite good and authentic (I guess until I can actually go to Vietnam and taste Vietnamese food WHILE I am there). This three star review is NOT without reservations though because, given the choice and the time, I WOULD rather drive across the border to Bac Lieu and have my Vietnamese food cooked there than here at Thang Long.

This is by far my favorite Vietnamese restaurant. Their jack fruit shake is delicious and their pho tastes like my mom's!!!! If you like a spicy noodle soup go for the bun Bo hue. The banh seo is not an item found in a lot of Vietnamese restaurants and I definitely reccommend trying it if you have the opportunity to. The double pork chop with rice is also one of my favorite dishes!

I'd say 3.5 stars! I went here earlier today and ordered the Pho Xe Lua, the Pho XL special. And OMG was the bowl huge! Its seriously enough for 2 people, and I was starving. I didn't finish mine. However, a few quirks: 1. Pho bowl filled almost to brim. I was afraid if I mixed it around, I would spill it. Give me a little room! 2. Broth very watered down. Not cool man! 3. LOTS of tendon and fat in my soup. Why? I guess it was my fault for not asking it to be removed. The spring rolls were good though. I'd like the spring roll sauce to be a little more flavorful. But mainly, quirk #2 was a dealbreaker for me. I'd still come back, because I want to see what else they have to offer. I want to try the quail, like the other reviewer raved about. And an interesting note, the original owner was still here walking around! I used to go here when I was in middle school with my dad, and that was over 10-11 years ago! This guy has not aged one bit. Must be the Asian genes.

I've been eating at this place for over ten years and very rarely have been let down. Eventhough the menu is super long (over 100 items) I stick to a handful of things. The first are the fresh rolls with peanut hoisin sauce. WIth shrimp and mint and a little pork rind I consider them the best in town. The next are the PHO soups (chocked full of fresh not frozen rice noodles). I usually get #96 which is extra large and has everything including meatballs, beef tripe, beef slices, and tendon. I also like the G3 beef with La-lot leave make your own rolls, and G6 same thing with beef and shrimp. These are especially good summer dishes ( lots of raw vegetables very salad like) and the PHO hot soups are good winter dishes. Lastly I like the whole catfish with ginger-garlic sauce and also vermicilli bowl with curry beef. Be adventerous and try everything on the menu, like the beef salad with lime juice, and the soup with egg noodles and duck. The price is right, the sri racha sauce is spicy, and this place is like a breath of fresh air when you dont know what you want to eat.

I love the roll your own fresh rolls here. They come in a variety of different protein options, and none are less than great. There are many good options on the menu and no one I have brought here has ever not liked their food. But those roll your own fresh rolls call me back time and again.

My husband and I frequent Thang Long quite a bit.. usually it's our stop on the weekend when we want some great soup. My husband is a huge fan of the hue soup, they put all sorts of meaty parts in the soup and he can't get enough. I'm a big fan of the tom yum soup, I usually get it vegetarian with no tofu and I swear they put extra veggies in there for me which I love. The soup has a great flavor of hot and sour and by the end my nose is usually runny. I've never had to add any type of flavoring to the soup because it's always perfectly flavored. Unlike Da Nang where we both felt like the soup was lacking in all sorts of flavor and couldn't figure out what? The wait staff is hilarious because it's a take no b*s* kind of attitude just what you expect from a hole in the wall type restaurant. The first time we ever went and ate there some people walked in and the waitress pointed to a seat and told them to "sit there" and that was that. We cracked up for a bit about it and knew we would be coming back. If you want some great Vietnamese food... go to Thang Long!!! It's definitely a family owned restaurant and they just know how to do everything correctly. If I was ever adventurous about a meal it would be at this restaurant.

We are regulars. I'm not going to lie. Food is excellent. The vietnamese food is excellent, I should say, as I do not know why anyone would order thai, here? It's quirky... I want to remodel and give this place a thorough cleaning but I don't care. Once our spring rolls arrive... I zero in on the reason we have come again... PLEASE? Is it WRONG to want to order ten spring rolls for myself and sit there and savor the flavor? If it is WRONG... I don't WANT to be right. We settle for one each. Then the owners stop by the table and chat us up a bit. They are so nice. And HERE it comes.. my usual is HU TIEU HOAC MI SAIGON ($7.50! WHAT!) broth chicken and pork, Saigon seafood rice or egg noodle , shrimps, crabmeat, squid, fishcake, BBQ / ground pork ...Aki gets Pho Tai Bo Vien Hanoi rice noodle soup with beef meat balls and medium cooked beef slices. BOTH Are delicious. And since it is COLD and FLU SEAON as of late.... I advise you... there is nothing, NOTHING better than being taken here. Load up your pho... chilis, thai basil.. bean sprouts... mix up your sriacha, hoisin, garlic paste, soy sauce, fish sauce and dip your beef slices... Your nose/head will be clear in NO TIME. I PROMISE YOU.

The spring rolls are alright. The chicken pad see ew was really bland. I ordered medium spice and it seems like it lacks spice and flavor altogether. Tried this place because it was around the corner. I wish I wasn't too lazy today to drive to 9 mile and Hilton :(

Many Asian restaurants suffer from an identity crisis. Are they Chinese? Thai? Vietnamese? The problem comes from one of focus. Often you'll see Thai dishes at a Chinese restaurant or Sushi at a Thai restaurant. Unfortunately, most of the time it doesn't work out and you'll merely get "mediocre" everything. Thang Long does not suffer from that problem. They are a Vietnamese restaurant but they serve some Thai and Chinese dishes as well. And they do them all splendidly, making Thang Long a rare gem in the landscape of Asian restaurants in the Madison Heights area The specialty, of course, is Vietnamese food: And if you're into finding something unique and authentic, go no further than the "Hanoi thick sauce" dishes: Chunks of meat (catfish or chicken) served in a stone hotpot with a compelling sauce that is salty and slightly sweet. They also serve something you've probably never tasted before: La Lot leaves, which are used almost exclusively in Vietnamese cuisine. You can order a Bun dish (Bun being a rice bowl with vegetables and meat on top) with Beef La Lot, which are tiny little ground beef sausages wrapped in this exotic leaf. Every time I've taken someone here for the first time, I at least make them try one of mine, and the reaction is always universal: "Wow!" It's hard to describe a new flavor. You just have to try it. The starters are sublime as well: You can get 5 tiny roasted quail served with a simple mix of salt, pepper, and lime juice, and their Thai soups are better than the soup served at most "true" Thai restaurants. The service is kind and efficient: You can tell this is a family-owned establishment, but the service doesn't ever suffer for it. Everyone seems happy to be working there, and it shows. The decor is a bit dated, and the bathrooms are a bit dingy, but if you want a truly excellent meal, definitely consider putting this place on your list.

This place is wonderful! Definitely the best Vietnamese I've had in the Detroit area. Now, I am no Vietnamese expert, so that is just my personal opinion. All I can say is that it was really great. So, now to the food. We started with the ginger tai beef and the make your own spring rolls with the shrimp skewered on sugar cane. The ginger tai beef was the best thing we had all night. I am still thinking about it...seriously it was so flavorful and tender! It had lime juice, mint, chiles, and ginger it was SOO good!! The spring rolls were really good as well. I don't know if I would get the shrimp again, but it was kind of fun to make your own. They give you the rice paper and water and all of the fillings and you roll your own. It isn't the easiest thing, so you may just want to order some that are already rolled for you. For our entrees we all got something different so we could try as much as possible. I got the medium cooked beef pho, which was very good. It came with the usual garnishes to add. My brother got the sizzling duck, which had a nice flavor but there were parts of the duck in there that most people would not want to eat, which was kind of weird. My boyfriend got the lemongrass chicken stir fry which was also really good. It came with bell peppers and scallions in it. I still liked my pho the best. I would definitely recommend coming here if you are a fan of thai or vietnamese food. It was very good. The ambiance and service weren't anything to write home about, but the food made up for it! I honestly haven't been to a thai or vietnamese place, or chinese for that matter, that has really great service so I didn't expect much.

Their fresh rice roll pork/shrimp are the best I've had, and 4 of them for 3.95 is a deal. My crispy rolls were quite tasty. I had the Hue Beef Vermicelli (Beef cube, beef slices, bun bo hue broth) as I like the broth that comes from the traditional Bun Bo Hue Viet, but sans the pigs blood cake and shanks. This was watered down terrible, and really lacked a developed flavor. I'll stick with my spots north of 13 mile.

I've had a variety of dishes here, and all were satisfactory, but I say if you're new to the restaurant (or Vietnamese dishes in general), stick with the pho. It's pretty much a staple of the place, if you ask me, and suitable for just about anyone's palette. If you're unfamiliar with the dish, go into it knowing you can adjust the flavor a bit to your taste, and you will be given the means to do so. It's really kinda fun, actually. Atmosphere is very casual, and the staff is pretty friendly. There can be a bit of a wait for tables, at times, even during the week, but I've always had my food ordered within 20 minutes of walking in the door. The portions are very decent for the price, so don't worry too much about going hungry, here. Interesting note about the place; they have a Durian shake on the menu. You either love it or hate it, there is absolutely no in-between. I was in the latter camp, but that is to be expected, I suppose. I happened to be with a friend who knew (from experience) what the actual fruit Durian was. If you want to read some interesting stuff, do yourself a favor and Google it. Let's just say there are places that have banned it. Anyway, we had to order it out of curiosity. What was really cool about this experience was that our server told us a bit of the history of Durian. After we tried it, and since we were the only table in the restaurant at that point, he escorted us next door to a Vietnamese/Asian market to show us what the fruit looked like and talk about it more. I thought this was a really nice touch, and heck, I learned some new stuff about food that day. Always makes for a good dining experience.

One enchanted evening, I laid eyes for the first time on a man I'd grow to love with all my heart, sitting in a corner booth at Thang Long. Thankfully our server's awe-demanding jewelry dissolved my first-date nerves the moment my eyes caught the gleam. Swinging from this man's neck was a huge gold rope chain with a Buddha medallion at the end-SO fabulous on so many levels I was momentarily stunned into silence! Catching my breath, I ordered up my favorite green curry number and sat back to eyeball my date. Both he and the meal were damn tasty-I was a happy girl. Their menu is extensive, the selection of blended libations alone is like a treasure map of non-alcoholic drinky delights. Avocado? Jackfruit? Come to mama, loves! My curry was packed with goodies as per usual and had quite a kick-in fact everything I've tried here has pleased my palate. Their use of plentiful, fresh ingredients (both veggie and meat) has always impressed, as has the manner of the lady who mans the front, an owner I believe. I find her refreshing and fun, basking in her swirl of surly and sweet. Nearly four years later, my man and I skip down a menu-paved path of adventure that began in that far left booth. Every time I see a Buddha I think of that now-legendary neckwear and Long for the Thang!

On advice from our friend Sammy who is vietnamese recommended Thang Long to us for some good food. I had to goto Madison Hts anyway to pick up some tech from MC and decided to check out the Vietnamese offerings on John R. Everyone and their mothers brother has told me to get the Pho (pronounced 'Fuh' - lol I did not know - But now I know). Bought a huge bowl of the Pho and but unlike many people have said - it was just Ok - i loved its smell the best - it tasted overly flavored with onion. I only wish I had about double the noodles however. Funny to me, I've had microwave Pho before which had tastier broth. I expected a flavor similar but richer. Oh Well. The spring rolls were smaller than I thought, they could of been fresher - they seemed almost to me as if they had been sitting around. Meh, I don't know for sure. We each tried some Ice Tea. I wasn't sure if it was a special type but it was pretty good. My wife who is not much of a Vietnamese food fan, opted for some of the Thai food offerings. She ordered some fried rice dish I can't recall the name, but it had Basil, chicken, and some garlic sauce in it. She liked it but remarked to me a few times It was not as good as what we've had at some other Thai restaurants. The main downfall for me was there was a wait for the food. Service was slow too. I still Hope to go back again and try some of the other items. 3 stars for the food, 2 stars for slow service.

I like to come here when I am eating with vegetarians and I am craving pho, because they have many options. If you are going just for the pho and are among carnivores, I would recommend eating at one of the other restaurants on John R. The thai food is just okay. The waitress is really awesome and helpful and she will make recommendations for you.

Only putting my two cents in because of what the other reviewers failed to mention...maybe because the portions are so big you're too stuffed for dessert! BUBBLE TEA!! So good, I've yet to find any as good in this area, or anywhere else I've traveled. It's creamy & icy with real fruit flavors, unlike the fake slurpee-like bubble teas I've had elsewhere. I usually stop in & order my bubble tea to go, mainly because I'm craving some & I'm in the hood. I typically get mango or coconut, but they're all awesome. The food here is great too, my favorite places seem to be dives...more concentration on the great food & fresh ingredients is fine by me!

Let's be clear: Thang Long is not the place to go if ambiance/ decor are important factors in your restaurant choice. But if you're looking for cheap, flavorful, fresh food, look no further. As many have mentioned, the soups are excellent. Even if you order carry out, they send you off with little packets of herbs, chilies, sprouts and limes to doctor your soup at home. Another favorite dish of mine is the duck cabbage salad (for the recipe, follow the link on my profile to my blog). The flavors are outstanding- the perfect balance of hot, sour, salty and sweet. (My only complaint is that I have to pick around the flabby duck skin, but I don't mind all that much). We've also tried the do-it-yourself rolls, which were great, and a TON of food. (Just don't expect something akin to PF Chang's lettuce wraps. These are way different and way better.) I have to dissent from those who like the fresh rolls- I think they could be better, and the peanut sauce seems very Americanized. I'd also recommend the Vietnamese items on the menu over the Thai ones. But as long as they keep that duck salad on the menu, I'll keep coming back for more!

My girlfiend and I came there late one night and had Bun Bo Hue (Spicy Noodle Soup) and Hu Tieu (Seafood Noodle Soup). The service was good, food was alright, place needs to be redecorated. Pros: Good price, decent food, good service. Cons: Dishes are not authentic to it's region of origin, needs make-over.

I can't rave about Thang Long, but it's not bad - hence three stars. The food is OK. The fresh rolls were the best thing I've had from their menu. The Bun is not as good as other places, but it's okay. The service is about the same as other Vietnamese Restaurants in the area. I think it is the largest as far as space and table tops go - so if you need to accommodate a large group this might be a good bet.

Coming in from the cold, our party was quickly greeted and seated by one of the several family members who own/run the place. It seemed like a perfect day for a bowl of soup--our choice, a delicious chicken soup with vermicelli, bean sprouts, green onion and a touch of cilantro. Since we planned to try several items, we avoided the huge bowl of traditional Pho. Our soup was great, a nice rich bowl of chicken soup that tasted totally homemade. Most of the other tables had the Pho--which looked delicious, and seems to be a must-try, and try it I will, on my next visit. Next up was an amazing salad of Lotus stem and shrimp, in a vinegar based dressing, tossed with mint, basil, onion, carrot, red pepper and shrimp chips. The presentation was great. The taste--slightly sweet, slightly tart, even better. We sampled some house "soft rolls", --rice paper wrapper, filled with chilled shrimp, pork, lettuce, vermicelli and fresh mint. The peanut hoisin dipping sauce is excellent. Our finest dish was probably the Quail roasted in five-spice, served with a salt, pepper and lime sauce for dipping. The meat on these small bones was really succulent, to say the least. I could have eaten this all day. Can't wait for my next trip there......

I usually don't write reviews, but I had to come on here and voice this: Worst meal I've had in a long time. And terrible service. The food was really dry and unappetizing, and I'm not a picky eater by any means. It takes a lot for me to not want to eat something. The soup tasted pretty good. I had a Vietnamese style soup with chicken. But the main Vietnamese entree I ordered was terrible. The service was really bad too. Our waitress was just really inattentive and forgetful. Not that that stuff matters that much to me, and if the food was good I wouldn't care, but the service and the food together, it was an overall negative experience. I won't be going back.

I went here because Thuy Thrang is closed on Tuesdays (boo). I had my usual, bo thit something (maybe?), vermicelli noodles with that sweet/sour/spicy sauce, pork, and vegetables served in a large pho bowl. This one was much less flavorful, the nuoc sauce was diluted, and there wasn't any mint chopped up in the dish. The pork was also not quite on mark. My friend ordered a fried egg noodle dish that was like a Chinese food style stir fried pork with vegetables served over a ramen noodle crown. No, I'm serious, this was an ode to college themed Chinese fast food. The good: - NO SMOKING (unlike Thuy where the owner chain smokes) - lots of seating - they have hot pots - fresh vegetables - open Tuesdays (but closed Mondays) The bad: - pretty bland I mean, I would go back here.. but there's no real reason for me to other than to go on Tuesdays!

Like many reviewers have alluded to prior to me, Thang Long has a very distinct family run restaurant feel to it. A really really slow, unattentive, delicious cooking family run restaurant. Our server (who I assumed was an owner or some kind of management) reminded me a bit of a cross between Bobcat Goldthwait and Rick Moranis. The restaurant was packed on a Saturday night and he was the only one taking orders/writing up bills/etc. Probably waited 20 minutes + to get greeted and place an order. Food came out quickly but good luck getting any attention throughout the meal. Per the suggestion of another review, I decided to try out the curry pancake. It reminded me of an overstuffed Asian/Indian crepe. It claimed to be filled with "shrimps" but it was a little light on shrimp. It did have plenty of different kinds of beef, though. The dish had a very unique flavor combined with plumish sauce and I was happy I tried it out. My friends are huge pho fans and both of them raved about Thang Long's pho soups. Overall, it's a cool place to check out an Asian cuisine that isn't widely available in the area.

If you want authentic Thai & Vietnamese dishes this is the place to go. Other places "Americanize" their dishes, while Thang Long is as authentic as you can get. I am a huge fan of Thai food and have tried hundreds of restaurants around the United States. Thang Long is by far in the top 10 in the U.S. and is my favorite in Michigan. It's easy to get past their "dated décor" when you try their awesome dishes and friendly service!

Up there for me as one of the best Pho places out of all the ones in Madison Heights...........and I have been to them all. You do have 2 size options here which you don't have at most of the others. The large one is HUGE. Plenty of beef and the broth is wonderful. Taro bubble tea was also excellent. Service was attentive and friendly.

This place only has one edible dish. Their soupy dishes are way water down. You can only order the Bo Nuong Di. I've try several dishes there and wasn't even able to withstand it. True I grew up on this stuff and expect certain flavors. But I wouldn't waste my gas driving here.

I'm reading all these reviews and I'm perplexed....has no one really eaten here?? I feel that Thaang Long is wonderful. My family and I go here almost once a week, and often are accompanied by friends who get really excited when we say we are going here. The interior is a little dated, but really not important to me. The food is affordable and delicious, my favorites are the Saigon Beef and the Catfish with lemon grass and red pepper...but beware, the catfish has bones!!! Other stand outs are the fresh rolls that you assemble yourself, the Bum Bo Huey (spicy beef pho), and the chicken with lemongrass. I've started adventuring away from my usual to try other things, but everything I have had here has been utterly delicious! The family that runs the place is always present, and from my experience they are always friendly and happy to see us. It's extremely affordable and you get quite a bit of food. Dang it, I'm going to go there right now!! :)

This is hands down my favorite restaurant. My wife and I go there every week. I'm never bored with their menu because they literally have a 5-6 page menu. They have Thai food but I never order it. The Vietnamese dishes are where it's at. When we go there we usually start out with the Quails which are crispy and seasoned well. The bones in the quail are so crispy you can eat them. At least I do. Every time I go there I try something different. I've probably had 80% of what they make. My wife isn't so adventurous. She gets the double pork chops every week and an order of the garlic butter shrimp, which you must try. I used to always order Ph but now I always try their house Specialties. Last time I ordered the whole crispy sweet and sour catfish. It was cooked perfectly. It's a lot of food. It could be split between 4 people. The only things that I would not recommend are the steamed fish and the rice soup.

Thang Long serves up some of the best Viet and Thai in the area. I've been dining here for a few years, have tried much of the menu and have yet to walk away anything but very pleased. I usually order the delicious Vietnames specialties like the curry pancake, but friends and I have even marvelled at the quality and perfect seasoning of their fried rice, pad thai, etc. Yes, the décor is pretty dated and it's obvious that the place also serves as a second home for the family that runs it, but for me that only adds to the charm when the food is this good..

Simply the best Pho in Metro Detroit. The only place I've had better pho was in Denver, Colorado where I was surprised by the large Vietnamese population. Let's go through the basics: Decor: This place is a dump. Usually, the family that runs this place has their baby there and while you're eating, you'll see the grandma in the corner changing the baby's diaper. Bad yes, but you know the food is home cooked. Don't even bother with the bathroom. Do ALL of your peeing before and after you arrive here. Service: Spotty sometimes. When it's busy, it can get downright horrible. They do try hard though. Usually, though, the food comes out pretty fast. Food: Here's where they shine. Everything I've had at Thang Long is pretty darn good. I usually walk in and get an order of summer rolls and the deluxe pho. Don't try the deluxe pho unless you're willing to eat all the authentic style pho with tripe, beef tendon, and rare slices of beef. Yummmm! (On a side note, I have tried their other dishes and they are also quite good. The beef, chicken, and shrimp dishes are all quite tasty. Stay away from the Thai food. It's ok, but these people are Vietnamese, so guess what? They're good at making Vietnamese food!) Price: $10 for a huge bowl of pho and the summer rolls. I just can't complain. I don't live in the area anymore, but whenever I do, it's one of the places where I stop in.

I'm a convert. My first trip was stellar. So was my second. And my third. Now, I'm beginning to explore the giant menu, and I have yet to be disappointed. I tried the duck salad on my last trip and the owner complimented me on 'brave choice.' Yeah, the service is not exactly overly hospitable, but it's efficient and unobtrusive. The owner is genuinely friendly, though, and the 3-year-old-girl who weaves in and out of tables is a doll. A real find for the six of you in Michigan who Yelp.

This is not only the best Vietnamese restaurant I've ever been to- it's one of the best all-around restaurants EVER. The food is beautiful, exceptional and FRESH. I can smell the fresh herbs as I type this. I hope I live here long enough to taste everything on the menu. It's that good. My advice is to try something you've never had before. It will blow you away.

I only came here because I heard this was the only PHO noodle soup restaurant in Detroit. I was far from cali and I was craving. Not bad pho, poor or little service was expected. You walk into a store front with a glass counter to the left with no greeter. The space is cold. Walk a couple steps straight and make a right, now you're in the restaurant section with tables and people seated. To your immediate right there are steps and raised wall seating area near the window, which makes the restaurant very dark because it's blocking the only light source to the main dining. The waitress doesn't understand too much English. Almost everyone ordered the famous combo pho noodle soup. I ordered the all white chicken.

Went to Thang Long today for lunch with my sister. We both ordered the Pho chicken soup with vegetables and vermicelli noodles. We also ordered the fresh rolls. It was great. The Pho was flavored perfectly and it was very fresh. The fresh rolls were equally as yummy. The woman who took our order was very helpful and very nice. Of course I had to notice the beautiful array of food being brought to other tables. I am already thinking about my next time back.

Wonderful!!! Absolutely authentic and great fresh ingredients, family comfort! Get the lemongrass beef if you really want something authentic not served else where. Definitely try the delicious cheap bowl of soups, they are all good. We loved it so much that we eat here almost every Friday night.

I was on the fence between four and five stars..I decided on five. The five is solely based on the food. This is great Vietnamese food. The Pho is the BEST!! The cabbage salad and fresh rolls are also excellent. The place is nothing fancy and the bathroom door has a shaky door handle LOL...but the food is oh so good. The service is OK. Waiter Kevin seems to always be there. He is short and to the point. But he was nice enough to bring out some different noodles and explain what is what. I've tried several dishes and they were all excellent. I wish we lived closer, but we seem to eat here twice a month. I would highly recommend this place to friends.

This place came on a recommendation by someone and I was disappointed. It is certainly one of the cleaner Vietnamese restaurants that I have been to, but the food was certainly forgettable. Who knows? Maybe I am spoiled having grown up in Vegas with their stellar Viet cuisine.

I do not eat a lot of Vietnamese food nor did I grow up in an area with a variety of Vietnamese restaurants, but I like to eat food and I like this place. Two things it has: cheap eats and huge portions, two things it does not: good service and current decor. They pile on the fresh food, may I suggest the build-your-own fresh rolls, a plate of herbs and veggies with some work equals tasty. I love the Pho, the curry fried rice was great, I keep wanting the try new items but always want more of what I already had. If it wasn't for the out-dated decor, the service that spends more time on the phone than waiting on you it would be a home run. However if you walk in knowing what your in for, you walk out fat and happy every time.

I've enjoyed Vietnamese food for a long long time...HOWEVER...This place was terrible. I don't expect the best decor for this general area alone, but it wouldn't hurt to try and freshen up the place a LITTLE....Whatever! Felt like a black hole and electricity was too much of a cost to turn on some lights!... To the food --- We started with the fried spring rolls that were fried earlier in the day and then heated back up in the oven, as we could clearly see the pan marks on the bottom. They were sooo extremely crunchy and dry, like dog biscuits. I settled with the shrimp in hanoi sauce. Now I have a general understanding of many Asian flavors but this was ABSOLUTELY INEDIBLE!! Two bites, 1 and 2 to confirm the OMG gag reflex. The sauce probably was not as thick earlier in the day and but with staying on a burner all day as a reduction occurred, it tasted as though fish sauce was continuously added to thin it a bit OVER AND OVER to keep it from burning....you may as well have poured SALTY SLIME down your neck. Was soo disgusting. I had NEVER had anything sooo salty. I couldn't taste anything else at all, just salt. I had the two bites, both including a shrimp and I know my knuckles swelled up before we left. Anyways, the service didn't make it any better either, inattentive and could give a shit whether we enjoyed our food or not. I had to ask for my bill...just to get the hell out. If I could give 1/2 star, I would. I will say though everyone else in the place seemed to be attached to the pho's...I can do a bowl of noodles in broth with slabs of pig and basil floating in it at home!

This place is probably the best Viet restaurant in town. The pho is great and the number 96 is the jumbo size that will feed a king. The crispy eggroll number A1 is awesome with sauce. Just beware of the owner's fat kid (son). He can be quite an obnoxious little brat. He locked my friend out of the restaurant.

I have only tried the pho, the fresh rolls (the ones with the shrimp in it), and a desert drink with coconut milk and a lot of other stuff in it. Ok, obviously I have very little knowledge of vietnamese cuisine, but I know what's good and Thang Long's pho is good. Awesome is more like it. I was turned onto pho by a former co-worker. He took me to Thang Long's one day after we got off work early. It was a cold Michigan day, and we both wanted something that would warm us up. We walked in and were seated by the friendly hostess, my buddy ordered for me. I want to point out that the menu has descriptions to go along with the vietnamese names of the dishes, so you won't be lost if you can't read the language. The food came quickly, and has everytime I've been there. We had 2 extra large bowls of pho, a double order of fresh rolls, and the two desert drinks. They serve all the 'fixings' with the pho: sprout, jalepenos, and a few other things. All condiments are already at your table (fish sauce, chili garlic sauce, soy, etc). I prepped my pho as my co-worker instructed, dipped my big spoon in (silverware is always spotless) and the rest is history. I have only visited during lunch time, so I don't know what kind of atmoshpere the place has during dinner and on the weekends. But its always quiet and cozy. I cannot say that the place looks all that great, but they keep it clean, which is good enough for me. Prices are great; my bill is usually less than $10. The menu is almost endless, and I am always amazed at how much stuff on it sounds so good. If you enjoy pho, I recommend this restaurant. And the desert drink I had was an experience on a whole different level of enjoyment.

I love Thang Long, not for the ambiance, but for a few regular dishes I stick to and their willingness to make them vegan (leave out fish sauce, chicken stock, etc.). I just ask them to make it vegetarian, with "clear stock" (probably water?), and they know what I mean and seem happy to accommodate. Some places either don't understand what I'm talking about or I get the feeling they're just nodding and ignoring my request. They also include a lot of nice veggies in their dishes, instead of just throwing in a few token carrot slices and pea pods. The greens and mushrooms are especially good. My absolute favorite dish is the jumbo pan fried noodles with tofu and vegetables, which has big mushrooms, chinese broccoli and onions. The flavor of the sauce (which comes separately if you get it as take-out, so as not to soggify the crispy noodles) and the texture of the noodles, both crispy and soft, is amazing. This is my go-to had-a-hard-day-need-takeout-for-dinner dish and it always hits the spot. When eating in I also like the rice paper rolls and sometimes get one of the Vietnamese (vs. Thai) stir fry veggie dishes. I haven't ordered any of the Thai things since it's primarily a Vietnamese place. The service can be slow when eating in, but I find everyone very friendly. There's definitely a family-run feel, as typically a grandma or small child are hanging out behind the front desk when I come in to order my takeout.
